Trap faqs
What kind of trap will I receive?
Our PFT traps are timber tunnel traps [approx. 420x210x160 3.5kg].
They come built to last – with a fixed mesh barrier on the front (with a hole for the pest to enter), a sliding mesh gate at the back (for rebaiting and emptying the trap), and a QR code on top (for scanning).
Your trap will come 100% ready to go – complete with bait, instructions, and a Victor trap or equivalent inside.
What pests will my trap catch?
Our traps use certified humane traps perfect for rats and mice.
We are looking to expand our range shortly.
How do I set/bait my trap?
Misplaced fingers hurt. These tips will help:
1) Only hold the Victor trap from the back
2) Bait the trap before you set it
3) Place the trap at the back of the trapbox
4) Keep your fingers away when set
5) Shake trapbox to disable the trap
Watch our video tutorial on our YouTube channel.
What bait should I use?
Thanks to our partnership with Pic’s Peanut Butter, each PFT trap comes with a pottle of peanut butter to start you off.
We always advocate for non-toxin bait, and anything high in protein (rats love it!).
We’ve always found peanut butter works the best, but so does cheese, chocolate, Nutella, or bacon if you’re feel generous!
P.S if you’re trapping mustelids (eg, stoats), fresh or salted rabbit meat, eggs, and specialist stoat lures work well. Mustelids are attracted by odour.
Head to our YouTube channel to learn how to bait your trap.
Where should I put my trap?
Trap placement is important. Place the trapbox on a flat surface near compost bins, along walls, or under cover where you know pests are lurking.
Rats and mice are particularly fond of running close to walls, plants, and fences where they’re hidden from keen cat eyes. So the best place for your backyard trap is beside a wall or fence where the rats might be running.
Try changing the placement every so often, especially as the number of pests being caught in that area reduces.
Head to our YouTube channel to learn more.
How often do I need to check my trap?
It’s good to check your PFT traps every couple of days until you’re getting results and the catch rate goes down, then check every 2–3 weeks. The more pests in the area, the more checks you will need to do.
Regular checking also provides you an opportunity to check the state of your bait. In wetter areas, bait can go moldy faster and lose its effectiveness.
What do I do once I catch a pest?
Firstly, congratulations! Your local birds thank you.
In a 2-stage process:
1) Whilst wearing gloves, carefully open the trapbox (lift the mesh slider at the back) and, without putting your hands inside, shake the trap out on the ground.
2) Once on the ground, lift the kill bar just high enough off the pest to release it, and dispose of catch in the bin.
Head to our YouTube channel to learn how to dispose of your catch.
Lastly, make sure you scan the QR code on top of the trapbox to let us know. Not only are catch statistics an important part of pest trapping, we want to be able to celebrate with you – and check if you’re eligible for our catch payment scheme.
You can also share your catch on social media too. Who knows, you may inspire another person to start trapping!
I no longer want my trap
We understand your circumstances may change and you can no longer keep your trap.
Let’s find it another home so it can continue to help our native birds for years to come!
We suggest you start by reaching out to a neighbour, a friend/family member, or a local trapline.
If you need help finding a new home for your trap please get in touch, we are happy to help.
Don’t forget to let us know if you rehome your trap so we can update the trap’s suburb on our trapmap.
I want to help without buying my own trap
There are plenty of ways to get involved with the Pest Free Token project without a PFT trap in your backyard!
You can make a direct donation, order something else from our store, or buy some $PFT tokens.
Did you know you can gift a trap via our store? We will make sure it goes to someone who needs it.
Looking for a free way to help? You can raise awareness by liking/sharing our project on social media. Contact us and we will send you a few free PFT stickers to distribute.
You can also take your own steps to reduce the spread of pests in New Zealand (eg, joining a local trapline or reducing waste).
If it helps our native birds we are all for it!

How do I buy $PFT?
Connect your wallet directly to the widget on our website to buy $PFT:
www.pestfreetoken.co.nz/token/trade
You can also trade $PFT directly via the QuickSwap Dex (a decentralised exchange).
Contract: 0xE6f0523B9DD59ca6166ECecC3Ae7e7cedF77A731
We are working on making the token available via other retail exchanges (eg, Easy Crypto).
Why should I buy $PFT?
We created $PFT so that you can enjoy the gains from cryptocurrency whilst making a positive impact at the same time.
$PFT allows you three simultaneous opportunities:
1) Access capital gains
You can sell your tokens whenever you want. Buy them low and sell them high and walk away with profit (less the small 3% project fee).
2) Generate income
You earn a small portion of all future sale transactions simply by holding our token.
3) Help save our native birds
100% of the small sale sell fee we take goes to pest eradication.
Now you can effectively make money at the same time as helping our charitable cause. Win-win!
What exactly are Pest Free Tokens ($PFT)
$PFT is the ‘native token’ of the Pest Free Token project.
In other words, Pest Free Tokens ($PFT) are the cryptocurrency we created to help fund the eradication of introduced pests in New Zealand.
$PFT runs as a smart contract on the Polygon network.

Whitepaper: here
Cool fact: $PFT is New Zealand’s first charitable cryptocurrency. We are changing and challenging the way people can be charitable in New Zealand.
How does the $PFT token actually fund pest eradication?
When you buy $PFT you keep 100% of the tokens you buy.
However, when/if you sell your tokens we take 3% (you still keep the other 97%).
That 3% fee is then split into multiple parts:
1) One part goes to the Pest Free Token Charitable Trust (to eradicate pests)
2) One part goes to everyone else who also owns PFT (so you generate income from owning PFT)
3) One part goes to the liquidity pool (so there is always enough PFT to trade)
4) One part gets burnt (which means it is gone forever. The total supply of PFT gets smaller, and your PFT becomes rarer).
The system works, and has done for over 2 years now. You can learn more about the tokenomics in our Whitepaper here.
Is $PFT bad for the environment?
Recognising the harmful impacts some cryptocurrencies have on the environment, we took special care to ensure $PFT is environmentally friendly. After all, it wouldn’t make sense to create something to help the environment at the same time as ruining it.
Extensive effort was made during the project’s design phase to ensure the token followed the green image we are working to preserve.
To achieve this, $PFT was ‘minted’ entirely in one electronic passing of the contract. This means there is no mining or ongoing energy consumption, unlike many other crypto projects. This type of token is known as ‘proof of stake’, and there is plenty of information on the internet about this if you’d like to learn more.
$PFT is made even more environmentally friendly by focusing on conservation efforts; helping to offset, mitigate, and potentially reverse the damage done by humans.
No fossil fuels; no massive ongoing energy use; no environmental harm. It is easy to see how $PFT is so environmentally friendly!
What are the key wallet addresses?
We publish all key wallet and contract addresses as part of our commitment to transparency. These can be inspected at any time on the Polyscan.

Why did you decide to create a cryptocurrency?
There are many advantages to using blockchain technology, from cost efficiency to transparency, but for us three main reasons stood out:
1) Why not!
Kiwis always pride themselves on thinking outside the box and you don’t get more outside the box than this. We have already proven the concept works.
2) Massive funding potential
The entire global cryptocurrency market is huge, worth at times upwards of $5 trillion NZD. Even 1% of that market would solve our nation’s pest problem. So, we did what any normal kiwi would do and created our own cryptocurrency to make sure our native birds get a slice of the pie!
3) More needs to be done
We knew more had to be done to become pest free by 2050. Government funding will never be enough and will always be subject to changes in policy or politicians. A longer-term and more independent solution is needed.
Is $PFT safe?
This is the right question to ask. Crypto projects over the years have been plagued by scams and ‘rug-pulls’.
Firstly, we want the same outcome as you. We want to see the PFT community and the PFT charity benefit at the same time. Ultimately our goal is to fully eradicate all pests from New Zealand by 2050.
Secondly, PFT proudly conducts the project using a formal constitution and trust deed filed with the New Zealand Companies Office and Charities Services. You can read these on our legal page.
These documents fit with the four values of PFT; Transparency, Community, Service, and Integrity, and ensure:
1) Our team are dox’d
2) 100% of all profit must be given to charity
3) Assets can only be used for charitable purposes
4) The Liquidity Pool is periodically locked
5) Developer tokens won’t be touched for a minimum of 24 months
6) We publish all project wallet addresses for transparency
Investing in crypto always comes with its risks and you should never spend more than you can afford. There are more details in our terms and conditions, including that the developers, company, and trust accept no liability for any loss you may incur, and that the information on this site, including attachments, is not intended to be financial advice.
We suggest you read these and seek independent advice if you have any concerns.
I want to help but don’t want to buy $PFT
We respect that not everyone interested in our project is also interested in cryptocurrency.
Beyond the $PFT cryptocurrency, you can still order a physical trap or make direct fiat donations to our charity, the Pest Free Token Charitable Trust.
Our charity is fully registered, which means we can issue donation certificates so you can get 1/3rd back at tax time.
